NEC staff were only able to call in and be present with a webinar, but the panelists all carried it forward in person. It was very moving. Many fishermen stood up to speak about their use of lifejackets and the reasons they are wearing them. They shared their poignant experiences with close calls and losses, along with their deep thoughts on safety, and their experiences with finding gear that will work for them.

“It was heartening to hear so much positive movement toward wearing personal flotation. Four years ago at the Maine Fishermen’s Forum, we largely heard people say there was nothing they could work in. Now we are hearing strongly from people that they want personal flotation and that they are finding PFDs they can work in comfortably and safely, said Rebecca Weil, Research Coordinator with the Northeast Center for Occupational Health and Safety. The NECOHS is leading the Life Jackets for Lobstermen project.”There are so many good devices to choose from these days, with a little exploration, and willingness to try something new, there is something out there for everyone,” said Weil.

The life jacket project is also sponsoring a photo challenge. Participants who send in a photo of themselves wearing a life jacket are eligible to win a Personal Locating Beacon.
