UMaine Offshore Wind Project
Not Funded

There was bad news in early May for Aqua Ventus, the offshore wind energy project being developed at the University of Maine in Orono. The pilot project was competing for federal development funding. The project was not selected for full funding and it has left the fate of the project uncertain.

The consortium was planningn to use the funds to move to the construction and placement phase near Monhegan Island.

Aqua Ventus was fourth of six projects considered for funding under a U.S. Department of Energy development program. Aqua Ventus will still receive $3 million for further research. Thy were in line to receive $47 million had full funding been approved. Had it been funded it would have moved the project to completion, which would have been functioning wind turbines.
The nasearch is on for alternative funding sources.
