Capt. Mark East’s Advice to the Careworn, Confused, Lovelorn and Other Outdoor People

Dear Capt. Mark,
I’m 19 years old and I’ve been fishing since I could hold a rod and throw a worm on a hook and hunting since I was 12. I’m seriously thinking about a career in the military, but don’t want to give up these two hobbies. Can you give me any advice?
Signed,
Career Questions

Dear Career Questions,
As long as you stay away from the altar awhile, I couldn’t suggest a better situation than the Armed Forces. Month’s leave every year, decent pay, travel, etc. And, if you’re clever, you can enlist (or at least you could) with some special requests for special training or areas to serve in that would put you in places for hunting and fishing. Then, retire with pension at 20+ and live in any area you choose. We’re proud of you guys and girls!

Dear Desperit Salor,
Tell your Mom my son was ferrying people to boats at 6 years old with his own skiff and 5 and 1/2 hp motor. I admire your spunk and the sooner you start your career on the water, the better. Just make sure you wear your life jacket and tell your Mom you’ll be fine, from old Captain Mark.
