Maine Brew Pubs

It has been about 25 years since the revivial of locally brewed beer got underway. Since then brew pubs and craft breweries have opened around the country. Maine is home to about 40. The big names are known to many-Sea Dog and Shipyard are a couple.

But off the main drag and down the side streets of smaller towns there are micro-breweries tapping a range of brews, many made with the basic ingredients grown in Maine. The ingredient list is on the short side-clean water, barley and hops. The knowledge and required skills list is on the long side.

Portland has about 10 brewpubs and breweries, Bar Harbor 3, Augusta area 2, one in Rockland, and 1 in Belfast. Outside of one each in west Lincolnville and Whitefield most of the rest are in southern and western Maine.

Yankee Brew News is the bi-monthly journal of the brewpub, micro-brewery revival.
