Capt. Mark East’s Advice to the Careworn, Confused, Lovelorn and Other Outdoor People

Dear Capt. Mark,
I am a long-distance runner with two children and and a wife that I adore. My children, both in their teens, have no interest in sports. They are totally wrapped around cell phones, texting and video games. I'm really concerned for their future.
Signed,
Future Frustrated

Dear FF,
I hear this often from friends and sad to say, I think it's the parent's fault by not limiting time spent on these gadgets. I often wonder in a teenager's life how they could have so much to converse about. My suggestion would be to take your family on an extended canoe trip where you have to do some living off the land. No electronics. Make them understand there's a beautiful world they're missing. By paddling a canoe they will soon realize the need to get their young bodies in shape physically.

Dear Capt East,
I’ve read your column a few times because my Dad brings the paper home. You sound like you must have had a lot of adventures and experiences to answer all these peoples problems. My life is very boring. How do I get to be like you.
Signed,
Yearning for life

Dear Yearning,
Thank you. It’s flattering for an old guy like me to hear from young people. You didn't give me your age but my suggestions are these. Read as much as you can. Read about everything that you enjoy especially about real stuff. Learn to fix things and how to use tools. Gives a lot of self confidence. Use your schoolwork as an opportunity not as drudgery. When you get out of school (get higher education) TRAVEL. Try lots of different jobs. Don’t get married young. Find something you really enjoy for a life career, but always remember there’s a big world out there full of amazing opportunities. No need to get stuck in a rut. Keep me posted and good luck.
